Wisdom tooth surgery in Zurich

Surgical precision for your dental health

Wisdom tooth removal is one of the most common oral surgical procedures, but it requires a high degree of experience and care. At The Eram Clinic, we consider wisdom tooth surgery to be a precise procedure that not only eliminates pain but also prevents long-term complications throughout the entire masticatory system. Often, these late-developing teeth do not have enough space in the jaw, which can lead to displacement, inflammation or damage to the adjacent molars. In a relaxed atmosphere and using state-of-the-art diagnostics, we ensure that the removal of your wisdom teeth is as gentle, safe and painless as possible.

Why removal is often necessary: Prevention and protection

Wisdom teeth, also known as eighth teeth, usually erupt in young adulthood. As the human dentition has become smaller over the course of evolution, these teeth often lack the space necessary for correct alignment. This results in them only partially erupting (partial retention) or remaining completely in the jawbone (retention). Such displaced wisdom teeth can exert pressure on the entire row of teeth, leading to tooth displacement, which often has to be corrected with orthodontic measures.

At The Eram Clinic, we attach great importance to diagnostic clarification. Partially erupted teeth often form hiding places for bacteria, which can lead to painful inflammation of the gums or caries on the adjacent tooth. The formation of cysts in the area of the crown of a displaced tooth is also a risk that we minimise through timely removal. Our goal is to protect the integrity of your teeth through preventive surgery and avoid acute emergencies. Thanks to state-of-the-art 3D X-ray technology (DVT), we analyse the exact position of the tooth roots in relation to the facial nerves to guarantee maximum safety during the procedure.

The surgical procedure: minimally invasive and pain-free

Many patients associate wisdom tooth surgery with discomfort. At The Eram Clinic, we do everything we can to change this perception through excellent surgical techniques and individual anaesthesia concepts. Every procedure is performed under highly effective local anaesthesia, which guarantees pain-free treatment. For patients who prefer to ‘sleep through’ the procedure, we also offer treatments under twilight sedation or general anaesthesia in collaboration with experienced anaesthetists.

We use microsurgical instruments and minimally invasive techniques to preserve the jawbone and surrounding soft tissue as much as possible. By precisely dividing the tooth before removal, we can often avoid extensive bone removal. This reduces post-operative swelling and greatly accelerates the healing process. After removal, the wound is closed with the finest sutures. At our Zurich clinic, we attach great importance to efficient wound management to enable you to return to your normal everyday life as quickly as possible.

Aftercare for a quick recovery

At The Eram Clinic, our responsibility does not end with the last stitch. The days following the operation are crucial for smooth healing. We provide you with a detailed aftercare protocol that includes tips on cooling, nutrition and oral hygiene. To reduce the risk of infection before the procedure, we often recommend professional dental hygiene beforehand. A clean, low-germ oral cavity is the best prerequisite for undisturbed wound healing.

After the procedure in our modern premises in Zurich, we will accompany you through regular check-ups. If you are planning aesthetic treatments such as teeth whitening or smile optimisation with veneers at a later date, healthy healing of the wisdom tooth region is essential. We ensure that you feel well cared for throughout the entire process and perceive the operation as a positive step for your long-term health.

Frequently asked questions about wisdom tooth surgery

Removal is often recommended between the ages of 16 and 25, as the roots are usually not yet fully developed at this stage and the bone is more elastic, which makes the procedure and healing easier. However, removal is possible at any age if there are medical reasons for doing so.

Our minimally invasive techniques keep swelling to a minimum. However, some tissue reaction is normal. This can be controlled very well by consistent cooling in the first 24 to 48 hours.

In the first few days after the procedure, we recommend soft, cool foods and avoiding dairy products and hot spices. Once the stitches have been removed (usually after a week), you can gradually return to your normal diet.

We recommend taking a break from sports for about a week. Physical exertion increases blood pressure, which could lead to secondary bleeding or interfere with the healing of the wound clot.

As with any surgical procedure, there are general risks such as infection or post-operative bleeding. Thanks to our precise 3D planning and the extensive experience of our surgeons, we are able to reduce specific risks, such as nerve irritation, to an absolute minimum at The Eram Clinic.
