Gum grafting in Zurich

Aesthetics and protection through microsurgical precision

A healthy smile is largely determined by the framework provided by the gums around the teeth. If this valuable tissue recedes, this is referred to as recession. The consequences are not only visually disturbing due to longer-looking teeth and exposed tooth necks, but often also painful due to hypersensitivity. At The Eram Clinic, we offer gum grafting as a highly specialised procedure in plastic periodontal surgery. With microsurgical precision, we restore the natural contour of your gums, protect the sensitive tooth substance and harmonise the ‘red aesthetics’ of your smile in the long term.

Causes and necessity of a transplant

Gum recession can have various causes that go far beyond poor oral hygiene. Often, incorrect brushing technique with too much pressure, a genetic predisposition to thin tissue or previous periodontitis are responsible. Recession can also occur after orthodontic treatment or as a result of night-time teeth grinding. At The Eram Clinic, we first analyse the individual triggers to ensure that the new tissue remains stable in the long term.

The need for a transplant is more than just an aesthetic desire. Exposed tooth necks have no protective enamel and are therefore extremely susceptible to caries and painful stimuli from cold or heat. Without the supporting gums, the underlying jawbone can also deteriorate more quickly, which jeopardises the long-term stability of the tooth. With a timely gum graft, we create a strong, resilient band of tissue that surrounds the tooth and restores the biological barrier against bacteria.

Microsurgical perfection: modern tissue harvesting techniques

At our clinic in Zurich, we use the latest techniques in soft tissue surgery, which are designed to be as minimally invasive as possible. In a classic gum graft, we harvest a small piece of connective tissue, usually from the back of the palate. This autologous material is ideal for regeneration as it does not cause any rejection reactions and bonds excellently with the existing gum tissue.

A particularly gentle method that we use at The Eram Clinic is the tunnel technique. This involves carefully loosening the existing gum at the site of recession to form a small ‘tunnel’ into which the graft is discreetly inserted. No large incisions are necessary, which speeds up healing and almost completely eliminates scarring. The transplanted tissue is fixed in place with very fine, barely visible sutures. This delicate technique allows us to achieve results that look completely natural, with no visible transition to the rest of the gum after healing.

Holistic integration: healing and lasting aesthetics

At The Eram Clinic, treatment does not end with the surgical procedure. The success of a gum graft depends largely on optimal pre- and post-operative care. Before the procedure, we strongly recommend professional dental hygiene to sterilise the surgical area and maximise the chances of healing. We accompany you throughout the entire healing phase and provide you with specific care instructions so that the graft can grow in undisturbed.

Once the new gum tissue is firmly and healthily integrated, it forms the perfect basis for further aesthetic enhancements. Once healing is complete, we often perform teeth whitening or fit veneers to the teeth, which are now optimally framed. This synergy of healthy tissue structure and modern dental aesthetics leads to a result that impresses with its naturalness and brilliance. At our modern premises in Zurich, we ensure that your gum graft is the foundation for a lifelong radiant smile.

Frequently asked questions about gum grafting

Thanks to modern local anaesthesia, you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Afterwards, we often cover the extraction site on the palate with a special dressing or a small protective splint. This prevents irritation when eating and ensures that the wound heals quickly and without significant discomfort.

The initial wound healing process is complete after about two weeks, when the stitches are removed. However, the tissue needs several months to achieve its final strength and colour. During this time, the graft adapts perfectly to its surroundings in terms of appearance.

Once the original cause – such as incorrect brushing technique – has been corrected, the transplanted connective tissue is very stable. It is significantly thicker and more resistant than the original gum tissue and therefore offers very good long-term protection against further recession.

In some cases, we at The Eram Clinic can also use artificial matrix materials. However, the gold standard procedure remains the use of the patient's own connective tissue, as this guarantees the best biological integration and the most natural colour result.
