Orthodontics for adults
At The Eram Clinic, we offer the most modern and efficient options for straightening teeth:
Invisalign®
Invisalign® is a virtually invisible teeth straightening solution. Invisalign aligners can be removed at any time. The aligners are very comfortable to wear. Unlike conventional fixed braces, there are no metal wires or brackets that could cause irritation in the mouth.
With Invisalign®, you also have the option of viewing the treatment plan and the desired result before treatment begins. This means you know from the outset what your straightened teeth are likely to look like once treatment is complete.
Damon-System
The Damon system uses gentle biological forces to correct teeth naturally - without the need for palatal expanders or tooth extractions.
With conventional treatment, healthy teeth often have to be extracted and/or palatal expanders inserted to create space. These methods are often uncomfortable, take longer and can result in a shorter arch and a flatter profile. The Damon system, on the other hand, provides a natural 10-tooth smile with minimal biologically sensitive forces and improves the patient's overall facial aesthetics. The passive self-ligating Damon brackets eliminate the need for elastic rubber ligatures. This facilitates tooth movement. Lightweight, high-tech wires with shape memory align teeth faster and require less adjustment.
Lingual braces
The Eram Clinic also offers the innovative Incognito Lingual concept, where the braces are attached to the inside of the teeth and are therefore completely invisible. Such a solution also makes it possible to visualize the treatment result for our patients right from the start.
As these braces are worn behind the teeth, they are the method of choice for anyone who is not comfortable with the aesthetics of a conventional visible or transparent model.
Ceramic and metal braces
Fixed braces are generally used for all corrections of misaligned teeth once the permanent teeth have erupted. Fixed braces consist of brackets, bands and arches. Brackets are small retaining bars or plates that are attached to the tooth surfaces with special adhesives.
Wire arches are then attached to the bands and brackets. The tension of the arches is transferred to the brackets, which exert the desired continuous tension or pressure on each individual tooth. Different materials and diameters are used depending on the treatment phase.
A more aesthetically pleasing option is transparent ceramic brackets, which are much less noticeable.
Orthodontics for children
There are various orthodontic treatments for straightening teeth in children:
Removable appliances
These can be attached to one or two arches and are aimed at the correct development of the child's jawbones.
Brackets
Metal brackets are usually used when teeth are too crowded or to make room for new teeth to develop properly.
No matter which treatment you choose: Our aim is to give you a radiant smile while providing maximum comfort. We will be happy to provide you with further information and an individual consultation.
Frequently asked questions
There are several options for correcting misaligned teeth and jaw problems, depending on the type and severity of the misalignment and the individual needs of the patient. Here are some of the most common options:
- Braces: Fixed braces consist of brackets that are bonded to the teeth and archwires that pull the teeth into the desired position. They are effective in correcting various deformities and are often used on children, adolescents and adults.
- Invisalign Aligner: Invisalign is a clear, removable aligner treatment used for mild to moderate misalignments. The aligners are inconspicuous and offer a certain level of comfort.
- Jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery): In some cases, particularly severe jaw misalignments, surgery may be necessary to move the jaw into the correct position.
- The choice of the best method depends on the type and severity of the deformity, the patient's age and aesthetic preferences. A thorough examination is carried out and an individual treatment plan is created that best suits the patient's needs.
There are various measures that can help with pain caused by braces:
- Cooling: Apply a cool compress or ice pack to the cheeks to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
- Pain reliever: If the pain is unbearable, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- Soft Foods: Consume soft, non-sticky foods to relieve pressure on the jaw and minimize pain when chewing.
- Mouthwash: A lukewarm saltwater mouthwash can help soothe gums and relieve pain. Simply mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and gently rinse your mouth with it.
- Wax or silicone: If irritation occurs from the brackets or wires, you can apply wax or special silicone inserts to the affected areas to reduce friction and pain.
The placement of braces may involve some pain or discomfort. During insertion, the brackets are bonded to the teeth and the wire is inserted. This can temporarily cause a feeling of pressure and tension as the teeth adjust to the new force and braces.
The duration and intensity of pain after a brace wire change can vary from person to person. You may experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort in the first few days after changing the wire. This is normal and may be due to pressure and movement of the teeth as a result of the new wire. The pain usually subsides within a few days as the teeth adjust to the new wire.
The frequency of wire replacement with fixed braces varies depending on the individual treatment plan and the progress of teeth straightening. As a rule, wire changes take place every 4 to 8 weeks.
Yes, even with a retainer wire on the back of the teeth, there is still a risk that the teeth may shift over time. This can be due to various factors, such as the natural tension in the jaw muscles that may occur after braces are removed or changes in the growth of the jaw.
Yes, it is possible for teeth to shift again after braces treatment. This can depend on various factors.
To reduce the risk, it is important to follow aftercare instructions carefully. This includes regularly wearing the intended retention devices such as fixed retainer wires or removable retainers, as well as regular check-ups.
After the fixed braces are removed, a so-called retainer wire is usually attached to the back of the teeth to stabilize the result of the treatment in the long term. The exact length of time the wire remains fixed can vary from case to case and depends on various factors such as the individual jaw situation and recommendations.
The average length of time you wear braces can vary and depends on several factors, including the type and severity of the misalignment and the orthodontist's individual treatment plan. Typically, the wearing time of fixed braces is approximately 1 to 3 years, while loose braces (aligners) may require slightly shorter or longer treatment times, depending on the specific adjustment of each patient.
The brace rubbers are an important part of braces and have various functions:
- Bite correction: Dental braces are often used to correct the bite. They can help improve an overbite or an underbite condition.
- Tooth position correction: They can also help correct the position of individual teeth. They are used to move teeth in the desired direction and correct misalignments.
- Closing gaps: In some cases, braces can be used to close gaps between teeth
- Correction of jaw misalignment: For patients with jaw misalignment, elastics may be used to promote proper alignment of the jaws with each other.
The use of braces requires compliance with the orthodontist's instructions. You must change the rubbers regularly and ensure that they are attached in the prescribed manner to achieve the desired results.
To clean fixed braces, toothbrushes with soft bristles and a smaller head are recommended. Additionally, interdental brushes or dental floss can be used to remove food particles and plaque between teeth and under braces. Brushing your teeth regularly and thoroughly is important.
The choice between fixed or loose braces depends on individual needs and the recommended treatment plan. Both types have their own advantages and disadvantages:
Fixed braces:
- Effectiveness: Fixed braces are often more effective at correcting serious tooth and jaw misalignments because they place continuous pressure on the teeth.
- Continuous correction: They cannot be removed by the patient themselves, which ensures that the correction is continuous.
- More complex cases: Fixed braces are often used in complex cases.
Loose braces:
- Aesthetics and comfort: Loose braces are less noticeable and can be easily removed, making them more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.
- Easier to clean: They are easier to clean because they can be removed.
- More limited effectiveness: They may be less effective in treating serious deformities and require good patient cooperation.
- Not suitable for all cases: Loose braces are better suited for minor misalignments or for pretreatment before using fixed braces.
There are different types of brackets that can be used in braces treatment. Common types include:
- Metal brackets: most commonly used with traditional braces.
- Ceramic brackets: can be less noticeable than metal brackets. However, they are slightly more sensitive and more expensive.
- Self-ligating brackets: offer less friction and shorter treatment times.
- Lingual brackets: These brackets are placed on the inside of the teeth so that they are not visible from the outside. However, they require some getting used to and can be more expensive.
- Invisalign/Aligner: These clear, removable plastic aligners are used to straighten teeth and are used for mild to moderate misalignments.
Yes, it is possible that your braces will become discolored over time. This can be caused by various factors:
- Food and Drinks: Consuming strongly colored foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, curry, berries and tomato sauce can cause the rubber bands and brackets of your braces to become discolored.
- Smoking: Smoking is one of the most common causes of discoloration of braces, especially those made of ceramic or clear materials.
- Lack of cleaning: Inadequate cleaning of the braces, teeth, and oral cavity can lead to plaque buildup and discoloration.
- Using Mouthwash: Some mouthwashes contain dyes that can cause discoloration.
To keep your braces properly clean, you should do the following:
- Brush your teeth regularly: Be sure to clean all areas around the brackets and between the wires.
- Interdental Brushes: Use interdental brushes to clean the spaces between wires and around brackets. This will remove any leftover food and plaque that can build up there.
- Rinse: Rinse your mouth regularly
- Avoiding certain foods: Reduce consumption of sticky, hard or sugary and heavily colored foods
- Regular check-ups: Keep your scheduled check-up appointments with the orthodontist.
The cost of treatment with braces starts at CHF 5,000.-
The choice between metal and ceramic brackets depends on personal preferences and aesthetic preferences. Both types are effective, with metal brackets being less expensive and more durable, while ceramic brackets are more discreet and aesthetically pleasing. The decision should be made in consultation with the orthodontist.
The duration of orthodontic treatment with brackets depends on various factors, including:
- Severity of the misalignment: The correction time varies depending on how severe the tooth or jaw misalignment is. For mild misalignments, treatment usually takes less time than for more severe ones.
- Patient age: The duration of treatment may also depend on the patient's age. For children and adolescents whose jaws are still growing, the correction can occur more quickly.
- Type of braces: There are different types of braces, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and invisible aligners. The choice of braces can influence the length of treatment.
- Patient compliance: Patient cooperation plays a crucial role. Regular visits to the orthodontist, following dental and bracket care recommendations, and avoiding certain foods can shorten the duration of treatment.
In general, orthodontic treatment with brackets usually lasts between 1 to 3 years.
