Root canal treatment is a common form of endodontic therapy. It is carried out with the utmost precision by our specialists using state-of-the-art instruments and microscopes. This procedure is used to relieve pain and inflammation caused by infections inside a tooth.
Root canal treatment is used to save a damaged tooth. In most cases, there is inflammation or damage to the nerve of the tooth. The main cause of such inflammation of the tooth root is tooth decay. However, dental nerves can also become inflamed due to accidents and, in the worst case, even die.
Thanks to state-of-the-art equipment and in cooperation with our specialists, we are often able to preserve painful and severely damaged teeth and thus avoid tooth extraction. Root canal treatment is usually painless, as the affected tooth is anaesthetized by the dentist beforehand. An appointment for treatment usually takes about 60 minutes. However, depending on the type of treatment, around 2-3 sessions of 60 minutes each are required to save the diseased tooth.

Frequently asked questions
At The Eram Clinic, the costs for a root canal treatment start at CHF 800. Please note that exact costs may vary. During an appointment, our dental specialists will assess your situation and then give you an accurate cost estimate.
Yes, it is important to note that pain after root canal treatment is possible and can have a variety of causes. On the one hand, the tooth's complex canal system occasionally cannot be completely cleaned, which can lead to tissue residues and bacteria remaining in the tooth and lead to re-inflammation. On the other hand, pain can also be caused by a fracture of the treated tooth. This pain may occur immediately after root canal treatment, return a few weeks later, or persist for a long period of time.
It is advisable to wait before eating after a root canal treatment until the effects of the local anesthetic have worn off to avoid accidental bites to the cheeks or lips. To avoid compromising oral hygiene and preventing the growth of bacteria, certain foods should be avoided for the first three days after treatment. These include products made from milk and pasta.
To relieve pain after root canal treatment, the following measures can be taken:
- Painkillers: The dentist may prescribe or recommend painkillers.
- Cooling: Applying ice or a cold compress to the affected area around the treated tooth can reduce swelling and pain.
- Gentleness: It is advisable to avoid chewing hard or hot foods in the first few days after treatment and to protect the treated tooth.
- Pain-free diet: A soft and cool diet, such as yogurt or pudding, may be helpful in the first few days after treatment.
- Avoiding Pressure: Avoid biting or applying strong pressure to the treated tooth to minimize pain.
Most patients experience pain in the first two days after root canal treatment, but this should noticeably subside by the third day.
The number of sessions needed for a root canal can vary and depends on several factors, including the complexity of the case, the anatomy of the affected tooth, and the severity of the infection. Typically, approximately three dental sessions are required, with each session lasting approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
Statutory health insurance only covers the costs of root canal treatment if the affected tooth is still worth preserving. If it is foreseeable that the tooth will need to be removed in the near future and root canal treatment has no chance of success, it is unlikely that the costs of the treatment will be covered by health insurance.
Yes, local anesthesia is used to desensitize the tooth and surrounding tissue.
A tooth requires endodontic treatment if the dental nerve is inflamed, infected or dead. This can be due to a variety of causes, such as deep tooth decay, injury, or recurring tooth infections.
During a root canal treatment, the patient does not experience any pain as local anesthesia ensures that no sensation is felt during the procedure.
